Situated in the heart of Northeast India, the Sociology Department possesses a unique advantage in understanding and addressing the complex socio-cultural dynamics of the region. With a founding date of September 6, 1997, and having since grown into a reputable institution, we boast a rich heritage of academic excellence and community engagement.Offering both Postgraduate (total strength 110 students) and PhD programs (32 scholars), we cater to a diverse range of students, nurturing their academic growth and research aspirations

Thrust Areas: The Department serves as a hub for scholarly inquiry, with a primary focus on the study of Tribes in the Northeast, Gender Studies, Livelihood & Development Challenges, Regional Politics and Rural Change, Culture, Ethnicity & Identity Politics, and Health Behaviour

Tribal Research Centre (TRC): The presence of the UGC sponsored Tribal Research Centre, underscores our commitment to understanding and addressing the unique needs and perspectives of tribal communities in the region.

Dedicated Faculty & Staff: Our team of 8 faculty members, 3 Professors, 1 Associate Prof. and 3 Assistant Prof., 1 Assistant Prof. in TRC bring a wealth of expertise and experience to the table, enriching both teaching and research endeavors. There are 2 office staffs (1 steno and 1 MTS) working in the department.
