12 The Tribal Research Centre, in collaboration with the Department of Sociology, Nagaland University, organized an insightful International Webinar onthe occasion of the International Day of the World's Indigenous People. The webinar aimed to explore the socio-economic and educational challenges faced by indigenous communities in India, with a focus on the significance of language and terminology in shaping perceptions of indigenous identities. The webinar commenced with opening remarks by Prof. J. K. Patnaik, Vice Chancellor of Nagaland University, who emphasized the importance of acknowledging and addressing the socio-economic disparities faced by indigenous communities worldwide. Prof. Patnaik highlighted the university's commitment to promoting indigenous knowledge systems and fostering inclusive development initiatives. Dr. Dolly Kikon, Associate Professor at The University of Melbourne, delivered a thought-provoking lecture on the theme, "Socially, Educationally and Economically Backward": How Words Define Indigenous Worlds in India. Dr. Kikon's presentation explored the ways in which language and terminology influence perceptions of indigenous identities and contribute to the marginalization of indigenous communities in India. Language and Identity: Dr. Kikon highlighted the significance of language in shaping indigenous identities and narratives. She discussed how labels such as "socially, educationally, and economically backward" perpetuate stereotypes and reinforce power dynamics that marginalize indigenous communities, thereby hindering their socio-economic advancement. Colonial Legacies: The webinar delved into the historical legacies of colonialism and their impact on indigenous communities in India. Dr. Kikon elucidated how colonial policies and discourses continue to shape contemporary perceptions of indigenous peoples, contributing to their exclusion from mainstream development agendas. Empowerment through Language: Dr. Kikon emphasized the importance of reclaiming indigenous languages and narratives as a means of empowerment and resistance. The event commenced with an introduction to the documentary followed by the screening of "Survey City," which offered a nuanced portrayal of urban landscapes and the multifaceted experiences of city dwellers. “Survey City" provided a compelling exploration of urban spaces, capturing the complexities and contradictions inherent in contemporary Delhi and on its borders. The documentary offered insights into the social, cultural, and economic dimensions of urban environments, shedding light on issues such as documentation to affirm the legitimate belonging to a particular place in Delhi's urban space.
