Department of Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry was established in the year 1997, in the University headquarters at Lumami in the Zuhneboto district of Nagaland. The Department has a total faculty strength of eight, including four professors, one associate professor and three assistant professors. Presently, the intake capacity for the MSc programme is 27 (twenty seven) students, and an additional 3 seats is reserved for students of EWS category. The PG as well as PhD syllabi are regularly updated with the inclusion of topics of contemporary academic importance, while also taking care of the UGC directives with regard to syllabus modification.

There is a vibrant research environment and so far 31 students have been awarded PhD degrees while 33 scholars are presently pursuing research for PhD. All scholars are supported by different scholarship and fellowship schemes such as DST-INSPIRE, NFST, etc. Students who are not recipients of any fellowship are given fellowships under the UGC-Non-NET Fellowship scheme. There are number of major and minor research equipment and each faculty has an individual research laboratory. The department had been partially supported by DST-FIST for five years from the year 2003, and again for another five years since 2016. There are also a number of individual research grants sanctioned to different faculty of the department. Research work is regularly published in journals of repute and some of the works have also been patented.

The department has strived to create provisions for experiential learning. In keeping with this, the department has been offering a full paper of research-oriented project work for M.Sc. fourth semester students in order to provide them training in different areas of research. Research scholars are regularly involved in all programmes of the Department, thereby creating a participatory learning experience.

National Seminars, workshops, career counselling programmes, etc are regularly organized by the Department in order to provide holistic development opportunities for the students. A mentoring programme is also in place so that the students can feel secure and supported at all times during their academic tenure. Students are also encouraged to partake in the study tour which is organized for the final year students in order to give them an academic exposure. Student placement is encouraging and students of the department have been able to find placement in various organizations including Universities, NITs, colleges and schools.

Vision

The collective vision of the department is to inspire and reinforce the youth to grow through research, teaching activities or any other source of knowledge, enabling them to thrive through future challenges.
