Department of Geography


The Department of Geography started functioning from the year 1997. At present there are 6 (six) faculty members in the Department. In 21 years of its journey, the Department has developed its infrastructure in terms of buildings, laboratories, like Remote Sensing, GIS and GPS, Geo- hydrological laboratory, Photogrammetric and Cartographic Laboratories, Meteorological Observatory and a Departmental Library. The Department of Science and Technology (DST), Govt. of India has awarded FIST programme to the Department for establishing of Science and Technology infrastructure for quality teaching and research. The faculty members has completed a number of R&D Projects, Spatial Distribution of Bamboo and Estimation of Bamboos in Mokokchung and Zunheboto Districts of Nagaland using Geospatial techniques (2016) and Operation of Permanent GPS Station at Lumami, Nagaland University is still going on. For the last 7 years, Department has conducted successfully IIRS Outreach Program (online) on Remote Sensing, GIS and GPS for Faculty members, Research Scholar, and P.G. students of Lumami Campus, Nagaland University. Department has organized an International short course on “ Landslide and Debris Flow Systems: Prediction, Control and Reclamation” with a Foreign Faculty from Oxford, United Kingdom under the Global Initiative of Academic Networks Programme sponsored by the Ministry of Human Resource Development Govt. of India. This was the first GIAN course of Nagaland University conducted by this Department in which 57 participants from Government Departments, Colleges and Universities attended the course and completed it successfully.


Research activities & Thrust area

Presently, there are 29 (Twenty nine) Research Scholars who are working for Ph.D. Degree. Out of them 2 (two) students has completed Ph.D. Degree this year and 8 (eight) Research Scholars have submitted thesis. 5 (five) Research Scholars are in receipt of U.G.C. Non- NET- Fellowship. The focus of the Ph.D. research is in the fields of applied geography, agriculture, population, watershed and water resources management, environmental Geomorphology, biodiversity, environment and development.
About three R& D Projects have been completed recently and presently 2(two) R & D project are under implementation.
Thrust areas in the Department include Environmental Geomorphology, Watershed Management, Hydrology, Agricultural Geography, etc.
