Centre for South East Asian Studies
The Centre for South East Asian Studies (CSEAS) was established in 2016 and is attached with the Department of Political Science under the School of Social Sciences as part of area studies programme to engage in and conduct academic and research activities relating to historical, geographical, ethnic, linguistic, economic and cultural connectedness between the North East in particular and India in general, with the region and people of South, East and South East Asia. The centre is committed to promote India's Look East Act Policy, broader and deeper understanding of South East Asian countries' history, culture, and people by providing resources for faculties, students, and the communities to learn and disseminate knowledge about the region. This centre will also attempt to explore the reconfiguration of South East Asia as part of what can be understood as the presence of "emerging India" and "rising China" into shaping the region as a "multi-polar" politico-economic space. It would also focus on understanding the fluidity of the region, where ASEAN and its associated regional mechanisms are engaging with many economic and political powers especially in the aftermath of "bipolar" world order.
Programmes
The Centre offers PG Certificate and Ph.D programme in the domain of South East Asia and the Indo-Pacific. The introduction of these courses assumes great importance in the light of India's foreign policy priority and principle based on Look East/Act East Policy to build strategic, security, economic and people to people relationship between India and the Indo-Pacific region in the post-Cold war period with North-East India as a gateway and the central bridging/connecting point.
