Department of Economics


The Department of Economics, Nagaland University was established in the year 1997 at Hqrs. Lumami. During the inception period, a single teacher headed the department with 6 students, but after strengthening the teaching faculty, the enrolment of students has been increasing. At present, the intake capacity at M.A. programme per academic session is 50 and teaching faculty is 7. Altogether, there are 95 students admitted for M.A programme during the current academic year (1st and 3rd year). Many of the students, who has graduated from the department are well placed at various positions in the fields of administration, education, banking and others. From 2017-18 onwards, ten (10) M.A students are awarded meritorious scholarship by Exim Bank, Mumbai.

The Ph.D. Programme was started from the academic session 2004-05. A total of 30 (Thirty) scholars have already been awarded Ph.D. degree in the department, while 35 (thirty five) scholars are pursuing Ph.D. Many scholars in the department have qualified UGC-JRF, NET and other fellowships.

The curriculum offered in M.A. and Ph.D. (course work) programmes are revised and updated timely, which are academically and socially relevant. The students are given ample opportunities to develop analytical thinking and creativity through various programmes in the department like seminar, field work, dissertation writing and other activities. Scholars are provided opportunities to enhance research skills and efficiency by conducting workshop on Research Methodologyand also facilitating them to attend relevant training programmes and software (SPSS) for data analyses. Faculties in the department are attending refresher courses and training programmes regularly. Moreover, they are getting involved in State and Central Government projects and policy making.

The department strives to achieve Academic Excellence in higher learning and research, also focus to contribute towards economic upliftment of the society through collaboration with government and civil society in the process of policy making and implementations.

Issues of development with special focus on Rural Development, Agricultural, Poverty, Inequalities, Regional Development, Environmental issues, Financial, Gender, Livelihood, Migration and Employment and others.
